WF Receives Grant From Gatorade Play It Forward Program

Gatorade has a longstanding history of serving athlete communities and is continuing to do more to create positive change. In the last decade, youth participation in sports has been on a double-digit decline, largely due to a lack of resources and limited access to athletic programs. To help reverse this trend, Gatorade has launched Gatorade Play It Forward, an initiative that empowers athletes to give back to other athletes so they can realize their potential through sports.

The Gatorade Play If Forward program gives Gatorade Player of the Year athletes the opportunity to provide resources to youth athletes in their community by helping youth-based sports organizations and their programming.

As a winner of the 2023 Gatorade Play It Forward program, Molly Feighan – daughter of WF Board Member Stacy Vaughn – selected the Welger Foundation to receive a $1,000 grant to help the next generation of athletes reap the benefits of sport.

About Our Story

Christa and Saul first met at the 1958 Stoke Mandeville Games and renewed their friendship in 1959 at those Stoke Mandeville Games. Fate would bring them back together at the 1960 inaugural Paralympics in Rome, Italy. Lured by the promise of excellent food and spare wheelchair parts, Christa ventured over to the American tent along with a few of her teammates. Saul and Christa started a conversation, but while he stepped away to refill their plates, another athlete came in to charm her. Naturally competitive, Saul shooed the young admirer away. The games were a success for both Christa and Saul—she won eight medals and he won two, but the true win was the start of their romance.
